Career Description

Etymologically, architect means chief builder. An architect is a person who plans, designs, reviews the construction of buildings and advises on conservation and restoration of old buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their principal purpose. These buildings can be commercial, such as office buildings, factories, and restaurants, as well as residential, such as apartment complexes. They make sure that these designs are safe, economical, functional and attractive. Architects use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and building information modeling (BIM) for creating designs and construction drawings. However, hand-drawing skills are still required, especially during the conceptual stages of a project and when an architect is at a construction site. They work on a project from start to finish and with lot of engineers and designers to ensure customer satisfaction.

Career Opportunities

  • Architects : They work on planning, designing and oversight of construction of buildings. They can work either independently or for some architecture company or real estate developing firm.
  • Architecture Designer : Architectural technologist or any other person that is involved in the design process of buildings. They design various structures such as buildings, light-frame buildings including family homes, agricultural buildings, etc
  • Architectural Engineer : Architectural engineers are those who work with other engineers and architects for the designing and construction of buildings
  • Interior Designer : Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. An interior designer is someone who plans, researches, coordinates, and manages such projects.
  • Landscape Architect : The practice of landscape architecture includes: site analysis, site inventory, land planning, planting design, grading, storm water management, sustainable design, construction specification and ensuring that all plans meet the current building codes and local and federal ordinances
  • Naval Architect : Naval architecture involves basic and applied research, design, development, design evaluation (classification) and calculations during all stages of the life of a marine vehicle
  • Architectural managers : Architectural managers plan, direct, and coordinate activities in architectural and engineering companies.
  • Construction and building Inspectors : Construction and building inspectors ensure that construction meets local and national building codes and ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications.
  • Drafters : Drafters operate as the supporting developers and sketch engineering designs and drawings from preliminary design concepts. They use software to convert the designs of engineers and architects into technical drawings.
  • Surveyors : Surveyors make precise measurements to determine property boundaries. They provide data relevant to the shape and contour of the Earth’s surface for engineering, mapmaking, and construction projects.

How to Pursue this Career

■ Although there are variations from place to place, most of the world’s architects are required to register with the appropriate jurisdiction. To do so, architects are typically required to meet three common requirements: education, experience, and examination.

■ After the 10th, architectural Diploma courses are three-year duration programs through which students can study all the basics of major subjects of Architecture

■ Architectural ITI courses are one-year duration programs through which students can study some basics of Architecture.

■ Candidates must have a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in 10+2 or its equivalent with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry as main subjects.

■ Entrance through (Joint Entrance Examination) JEE or (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) NATA, AIEEE, CEED, TANCET, etc.

■ Pursue graduation like B.Arch, B.E, B.tech, B.Sc for 4-5 years.

■ Pursue M. Arch, M.E, M.tech, M.Sc for 2 Years

■ Pursue Master of Urban and Regional Planning (M.U.R.P.) for 2 years

■ Pursue doctorate courses for senior positions

■ The experience requirement for degree candidates is usually satisfied by an internship.

■ Apart from getting professionally certified, students should also pursue as many architecture courses online as possible. Such courses let students study architecture from a global perspective and from top professors across the globe.

■ Finally, a Registration Examination or a series of exams is required prior to licensure

Work Description

■ Meet with clients to determine objectives and requirements for structures

■ Give preliminary estimates on cost and construction time

■ Direct workers who prepare drawings and documents

■ Prepare scaled drawings, either with CADD and BIM or by hand

■ Formulating, designing and presenting plans & drawings to the client

■ Prepare contract documents for building contractors

■ Manage construction contracts

■ Supervise projects from its starting stage to its completion stage

■ Visit worksites to ensure that construction adheres to architectural plans

■ Ensuring that the ecological balance of the project is achieved
